philosophy of our research group
Although there are many different research projects led by undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral researchers/visiting scholars in the Soil Ecosystem Dynamics Lab, ranging from field work to lab work (or both), these activities always involve team work which is guided by the following principles.
respect
Respect for yourself and for others. Respect your own limits and ask for help and respect others asking for help. Discrimination is not tolerated and we strive to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment. Respect also includes being sensitive to our private life.
sharing & involvement
Sharing among our research group by sharing expertise of how to use various laboratory instrumentation, analytical methods or helping with lab and field work fosters a cooperative environment. Sharing our research results promotes open science. In the Soil Ecosystem Dynamics Lab, students support each other in a non-competitive environment. When possible, posting pre-print versions of our manuscripts on designated University of Waterloo platforms makes our research freely available. We also share re-prints of our publications with researchers that can not access manuscripts directly through their institutions.
Student involvement in various activities in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability through various committees builds community and creates life-long bonds. Involvement in environmental causes and participation in science outreach activities external to University of Waterloo are encouraged.

communication
Good communication among members of our research group is key to a functioning research program and its members. In person and virtual communication prevent misunderstandings. Efficient and transparent communication can also occur in written form using email. Good verbal and written communication skills are central to disseminating science. In the Soil Ecosystem Dynamics research group, we support each other in preparing conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Public outreach to disseminate our research broadly via various media (e.g., press releases, radio shows etc.) are encouraged.
